                                                                  Walking the Walk 1: Reflections

On the 19th of February I walked our first draft of a route using the Google Map that Alex had pined our chosen art works within.

The experience was interesting and very thought provoking, for the group project and personally.

Aware that I would have to potentially take photographs in the park later in the project, something I am very uncomfortable with I used my phone and photographed one of the camellias. Not a great picture photographically but a beginning for the future.

Earlier today I wrote this reflection on the experience in an email for the group

Hi All,

Friday's walk using the map that Alex has placed pins in to highlight art works, was very thought provoking and interesting.

These are a few thoughts and ideas I wanted to share from the experience that we may or may not find useful.

It lead to me thinking about my different senses, looking and seeing, listening, touch, smell, and how different things make you feel.

It also encouraged me to think about the different seasons, and the many weather conditions we experience - sometimes all on the same day. With many of them adding to the experience even the rain. I'm an outdoors person and the rain and wind doesn't put me off going outside and I look for the joys in those elements.

It also got me thinking about textures, more on that later in the email.

A brisk 1 hour walk can cover 2.7 miles, however when you are exploring with all your senses it takes much longer. It can also take longer if you have small children or are visually impaired or just want to take your time and enjoy i5.

I spent a good couple of hours about 2 hrs 45mins exploring the route and could of spent a double that easily and more.

I walked from the gallery to the park. I spent 15 minutes in the park but could easily of stayed much longer, regardless of season. The automata could bring people into the park that are not usual park users. Myself included, much as I enjoy the park I have been educated that it's a place for families and so don't feel comfortable there. Maybe we could look at the gallery online and see if there are any other works that could be connected to the park?

Between the park and the gallery including some of the other works we had chosen there is the old police station which has a picture or drawing in the gallery online https://www.falmouthartgallery.com/Collection/2010.12

There is also the early photographer who lived between the park and the URC. There is a sign on the gate of the house. This got me thinking about Henry talking about the athenaeum club last week which is also just nearby and what other options were in this small area by the park?

Maybe walking from the gallery to the park could take one route and the return part another towards the mural on webber Street?

High Street - this really got my imagination thinking as I walked up to the view of Flushing, as Barrack Ope is part way up and there is an good opportunity to explore textures here with the cobbles https://www.falmouthartgallery.com/Collection/2003.3

My experience in High Street grew as I remembered Cabaret was part way up on the right hand side. I think Sian also mentioned it in our last meeting. I can remember going in with my grandmother when I was young. I was always fascinated by the window and intrigued by what maybe inside. I wonder whether there might be any more works that we maybe able to consider for this area? The shop windows were very eye catching and it would be an area of town that people could rediscover that wouldn't normally visit it.

I then headed to the pier area where there are multiple images from the gallery to explore. I have always loved the pier and it was lovely to experience it differently. Again I spent a lot of time here and it got me thinking about the triangle - ish shape that I had covered so far and how richly it is represented in different ways in the collection of the gallery and that we have only touch up on it.

As I walked onwards through the town to to explore the walk further it struck me that there was a natural geographic separation from the first part and that maybe there is two walks or an optional extension with the second walk and/or part being through the town and out towards the docks. Or whether people wanted a more themed approach?

As you can see it left me with lots to think about and lots more questions than answers

These are just some of the thoughts and feelings having walked it through and can be discussed debated evolved or binned.

I hope you find it useful

I'm going to look again at the gallery online and see what else it can offer us.

All the best

Becky
