Reflecting on working with the app - Trying to see my way through the trees
Last week I agreed with the group I would upload both the photographs and the screen shots of the artworks to the app in the order that the route had been written.
I had ready all the high resolution photographs and artworks on my iPad. Thinking that people would like to expand them on there screen or look at them on a very big screen. I had downloaded google chrome the only browser that supports the walk programme and was ready to go….
Within minutes I hit my first wall, the images wouldn’t upload. I tried a few different ones some would and some wouldn’t upload. I reread the instructions brief nothing there about sizes. I sent all the images back to Lightroom and resized them dramatically smaller. I also emailed Mike the app founder about maximum sizes of images and sound, as this would have saved me a massive amount of time had they been in the instructions.
Having resized them all I began uploading them. This was a very labour intensive experience as the programme is very clunky and needs to be more intuitive. Both in its own right and when uploading from other places such as Dropbox, Google, etc
What should of taken me an hour maximum with the correct instructions and an intuitive work flow cost me a whole day of my life.
I also found out that I didn’t need all the pictures I had taken to match each artwork, as one per stop was sufficient, another waste of my time.
Since the experience another member of the group has had difficulties uploading sound files even though I had recounted my learning and has asked me to upload his sound files - urgh! Will this be another day of my life battling with technology that is far from intuitive
What have I learnt ?
To ask more questions on training sessions
That I value clear instructions and an intuitive work flow
That the project has been very time expensive
How am I going to move forward with it ?
Dig deep and get on with it - there is light coming through the trees
